I had a patient ask me recently, “Is it possible for my dental implants to get cavities?”
The short answer is, no…
Dental implants are composed of titanium or zirconium – neither of those materials can get cavities (also known as caries) like natural teeth.
Cavities are caused by acids derived from bacteria, food, drink, supplements, and medications. Essentially, anything you consume that decreases the acidity pH below 5.5 can begin to destroy to your teeth. Harmful acids can attack your teeth, gums and bone. Surprisingly, all of this can occur within just seven minutes.
It’s noteworthy to point out that if you have a combination of dental implants and natural teeth, the natural teeth can get cavities. So, remember the 7 Minute Window!
