Dirty Mouth book Dr Joseph Kravitz

Mouth Made in Heaven

“Mouth Made in Heaven” is excerpted and modified from the national best-selling book,
Dirty Mouth

My name is Dr. Joseph Kravitz, DDS, MS. I am a prosthodontist by design. “Prostho what?” is the usual reply from a friend or patient. It’s not a household term because it’s in Latin, as is most of dentistry. A prosthodontist is simply a dentist who specializes in understanding and treating the causes of dental disease. For me, it has been, is, and will continue to be more than just a job of fixing mouths.

Prior to dental school, what I knew for sure was that I wanted to help others. A noble sentiment shared by all of us, but how could I specifically serve and contribute to society for a living? Well, my path became illuminated the day I fully embraced my own personal struggle…with my mouth.

I have a speech impediment. I stutter. And I only stutter around other people. Every moment of every day, I need to monitor my internal stresses and learn to relax my vocal cords.

I learned that if I decided to see my stuttering as a “flaw,” then it would continue to hold me back in life. If I decided to see stuttering as a “gift,” then I could use it to help others.

I learned that I can easily teach others how to improve various aspects of their lives. I am inspired to help others learn how to improve communication. And, communication involves the mouth. What a gift!

My media experiences and public visibility throughout the years, culminating with the release of this book, are a testament to my personal victory. But the supreme challenge that we collectively experience with the mouth is dental disease. It matters, it is serious, and we can no longer afford to merely stand by.

Now, what physical or emotional affliction are you struggling to overcome? And what is keeping you from taking action?

  • Start simple.
  • Grab a notepad and record the date.
  • Jot down your struggle.
  • Commit to overcoming it NOW.
  • Keep track of the steps you’re taking towards
victory.
  • Do not be deterred no matter how difficult it
seems.
  • Mark the date upon which you’ve become
victorious.
  • Tell me, tell your family, and tell your
friends.
