Public Health Warning: Risks with Sharing Beverages

Rockville Maryland dentist, Dr. Joseph Kravitz, is here to warn you about the health risks of sharing beverages with other people. As discussed previously, kissing and saliva contain pathogens that can harm you. The same issues, problems and diseases that get transmitted through kissing, also get transmitted by sharing a beverage.

If you place your lips on a cup, mug, glass, bottle or straw…you can get diseases, problems and new diseases from another person. The way to prevent you from getting sick is to not place your lips where the other person did, or not at all.

Here’s Dr. Joseph Kravitz’s list of changes to make to keep your beverage drinking in a state of health:

Use your own straw

Order your own drink

Use the other side of the cup, mug or glass (only if you know for a fact that their lips and saliva did not contaminate that side)

Pour some of the beverage into a clean container

Don’t share beverages

If you do get ill from sharing a drink, such as a sore throat, herpes lesions on your lips, burning mouth, mouth pain, mouth swelling, Dr. Joseph Kravitz suggests you visit with a dentist as soon as practical. If you don’t have a dentist, feel free to make a reservation with us.
